SELECTIVE SOLDER PROCESS

The desire to produce smaller, more compact and complex electronic products requires precision and repeatability throughout the printed circuit board (PCB) assembly process. Excel Electronics is utilizing programmable selective soldering systems to increase productivity and volume, which achieves greater product quality and consistency.

This automated system is ideal for components that cannot be effectively hand soldered or withstand exposure to high temperatures involved in wave soldering. The flexible molten solder delivery system solders connectors and other odd form components onto PCBs within 1.5 mm of any nearby SMT components. The system also has proven effective to remove and replace components consistently in a rework situation.

Selective soldering provides tools for absolute control of all process parameters, including immersion depths, pre-heat dwells, travel distance, speed, solder temperature and wave height. The solder distribution system is designed to minimize dross build up while providing an extremely consistent and repeatable solder wave shape. A nitrogen blanket captured within the enclosed solder pot inerts the molten solder surfaces minimizing dross, icicles and solder bridges. Additional cost savings are realized by the elimination of the masking process, the reduction of hand soldering, inspection and touch-up expenses.

SELECTIVE SOLDERING PROVIDES THESE ADVANTAGES:

  • Absolute control of all process parameters
  • Programmable, precise, and repeatable performance
  • Increased productivity and product quality while reducing costs associated with hand soldering
  • Soldering connectors and odd-form devices into printed circuit boards within 1.5 mm of any nearby SMT components
  • Removal and replacement of through-hole components in a rework situation
  • Minimizing dross, icicles, solder bridges, inspection and touch-up expenses
  • Providing top-side solder fillets to EIA and SMTA standards

SILICONE COATINGS

Silicone coatings can be essential in the production of today’s electronics technology for long-term, reliable performance. They provide sensitive circuits with protective barriers against environmental contaminants, vibration, moisture and humidity. In addition, conformal coating adds a layer of protection from ozone and ultra-violet degradation by providing durable dielectric insulation.

Excel Electronics’ customers have the advantage of greater efficiency, accuracy and quality control of conformal coating applications with the PVA650, a four-axis robotic platform for dispensing a wide variety of adhesives, sealants, and conformal coatings. The PVA650 is capable of applying silicone films as thin as 0.0005”. Programmable coverage eliminates the need for masking, resulting in cleaner more efficient operation with the widest range of control in the industry.

This precision equipment controls the amount of coating applied per cycle for consistent results, time after time. Selective spray conformal coating application significantly increases the transfer efficiency of silicone over traditional hand spray, dip and brush applications. Servo-motor controlled rotation of the spray and dispense heads permits access to the sides and shadowed areas of a component to achieve consistent conformal coating application. A wide range of custom coatings is available for specific application requirements.

CONFORMAL COATING PROVIDES THESE ADVANTAGES:

  • Silicone coatings are resistant to ozone and ultra-violet degradation
  • Films as thin as 0.0005"
  • Protective barriers against environmental contaminants
  • Durable dielectric insulation
  • Stress-relieving, shock and vibration absorption over wide temperature and humidity ranges
  • Physical and electrical properties are maintained over a broad range of operating conditions
